Homework Policy

This year I will be focusing on teaching your child responsibility and independence. Your child will be responsible for recording daily assignments into a planner provided by the school. The planner and all assignments will be stored in a homework binder.  Please check your child’s planner and homework daily. Students who do not complete homework will have to complete it during recess.

The Importance of homework

Your child will have daily homework that is used to review and strengthen the skills taught in the classroom. Homework will be specific to your child's skill level and needs. We will be using the homework in class, so it is important that homework is completed and turned in at the beginning of the school day.
If your child is struggling with a concept you are encouraged to help your child, but you should not be doing the homework for your child or spending hours on a homework assignment.                                                                                                                                 This is a pivotal year for your child to learn how to be independent and show responsibility. Next year your child will be in a larger class, and it is expected that your child will already know how to use a planner and will be responsible for completing assignments independently.

how to help at home

  1. Please set aside a quiet space, away from the television, for your child to focus on his/her homework.
  2. Check your child's homework and planner to see that all assignments are completed.
  3. Read with your child or have your child read to you!
  4. Visit the public library! www.sjpl.org/
  5. Play games with your child to practice spelling patterns and math facts!

reading is important!

The first priority is that your child reads for a minimum of 20 minutes each day.  You can ask your child to retell the story to you, read the story out loud to work on fluency, or ask questions about the characters, setting, or plot.

For extra practice,  your child will receive a worksheet reviewing the math concept learned that day.  Math help videos can be found at  moodle.pleasantonusd.net/course/view.php?id=262#section-1
